Wellness Wednesday: Hot and Cold: The Secret Combo for a Longer Life?

Wellness Wednesday: Coffee & Chillin’ in Venice Beach 🥶☕️🏝

Happy Wellness Wednesday,

Ever thought that the key to a longer, healthier life might be a Sunday morning well spent? Last weekend, I hit up the Coffee & Chill event in Venice Beach - a wellness playground where the only thing cooler than the ice baths is the DJ spinning at 10 a.m.

The Experience:

Picture this: You, sipping on a perfectly brewed coffee, or matcha in my case 🍵, as the sun rises over Venice. All around, people are jumping into ice baths, sweating it out in saunas, getting chiropractor adjustments, and unwinding with massages - all while vibing to the DJ’s beats. Oh, and did I mention? It's also a killer spot to meet new friends or singles. 💙

Why It Matters:

Turns out, these wellness activities aren’t just fun—they’re scientifically backed to help you live longer. Here’s the lowdown:

  • Ice Baths/Cold Plunges: Regular cold exposure can boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. Studies suggest it can even increase longevity by promoting better stress resilience.1 But here’s a pro tip: avoid cold therapy right after weight training to maximize muscle recovery.
  • Saunas: Sitting in a sauna isn’t just about sweating out toxins. Regular sauna use is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and improved cardiovascular health. Research shows that frequent sauna use can lower mortality rates by as much as 40%.2
  • Socializing: Did you know that strong social connections can add years to your life? Regular social interaction can decrease stress, lower your risk of mental decline, and improve overall well-being. Plus, who wouldn’t want to combine wellness with making new friends or even meeting that special someone?3
  • Coffee & Matcha: Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or a matcha enthusiast, both beverages come packed with antioxidants. Coffee drinkers have been shown to have a lower risk of several serious diseases, and matcha’s high EGCG content is linked to improved brain function and fat loss. 4, 5

How to get the most out of these wellness rituals:

  • Ice Baths: Aim for 2-3 times per week, ideally after your morning cardio or as a standalone activity. Just don’t do them right after lifting weights - let your muscles recover first, unless you want to stop muscle growth.
  • Saunas: Try to hit the sauna 3-4 times a week for about 15-20 minutes. It’s great after a workout, or as a relaxing evening ritual.
  • Socialize: Make it a goal to attend one community event or social gathering per week. Not only is it good for your mental health, but it’s also a lot of fun.
  • Coffee/Matcha: Enjoy your favorite brew daily, but be mindful of the timing - early morning is best to avoid disrupting your sleep.

Final Thoughts

The Coffee & Chill event is more than just a wellness trend; it’s a way to incorporate science-backed habits into your routine, with a side of fun & social connection. So, wether you are looking to start your own longevity rituals or join an event in Venice, San Diego, Miami, or even Bondi in Australia, remember: a little hot, a little cold, a little socializing, all equal a lot of longevity.
